How to: Add custom URL (or “Slug”) in WordPress pages

By default, you can’t add any custom URL in your WordPress Pages. With 2.5, changing the page URL became less intuitive. If you have Permalinks enabled, and you have selected the Day and Name option (Click the Settings tab, and then click the Permalinks subtab), then the permalink automatically shows up below your post title when you start typing in the body of your post not just the title(see image below).

permalinks

What if you want to link the pages in WordPress to other site(like free magazines site on my WordPress Pages)? You can only edit the section that i circled in red. So obviously you can’t link to other sites.

However, if you have a different permalink option selected, or if you don’t have permalinks enabled at all, you must do the following to edit your page URL:

1. Write a page by going to Write > Page.
2. Click the Publish button to publish your page.
3. Go to Manage > Pages.
4. Click Edit next to your page.
5. See the permalink under the title, and click the Edit link to change it.

To add custom URL in WordPress Pages manually, read here.

Thus, if you don’t have the right permalink option enabled, you have to publish your pages before you can set the URLs. If you think adding custom URL manually is too hard for you. Continue reading below on “How Add custom URL (or “Slug”) in WordPress pages” the easy way(by installing plugin).

Page Links To WordPress Plugin

Page Links To is a plugin that allows you to make a WordPress page or post link to a URL of your choosing, instead of its WordPress page or post URL (off-site resource like YouTube or Delicious page). This also works if permalink option is enabled

Your WordPress has to be 2.7 or higher. Go to http://txfx.net to download Page Links To WordPress Plugin. Next upload the page-links-to folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory and Activate.

Usage

Create page to have a title (i used “Free Magazines” for mine) of your choosing and leave the content blank. It won’t be used because your page will be redirect to other site you desired.

Next, scroll down till you see Page Links To tab. Add your custom URL in(see image below). You can also open your link in a new window if the option is checked. You can also use a permanent 302 redirect but default is 301.

After you satisfied with your settings, Publish your new Page (see image below for my new WordPress Page).

Hi, is there a way/plugin that would allow me to automatically filter out unnecessary words from the post slug? So that words like “de”, “and”, “or”, etc won’t be included there in the first place?

    Thanks!
