How to: Play Gameboy Advance ROMs on your Computer(Windows)
This question was asked by my friend. He asked me whether if he can play his GBA ROMs on his computer. After i taught him how to play Gameboy Advance ROMs on his Computer, i decided to share this tips on my blog. Playing GBA ROMs is simple, all you need to do is download an emulator such as Virtualboy Advance and transfer Gameboy Advance ROMs to your hard drive so you can play Gameboy Advance ROMs on your computer.
Getting your GBA ROMs to your PC

Before you transfer your ROMs to your hard drive, you need Flash Advance Linker. The Flash Advance Linker is the first professional mass produced development and backup device for the Gameboy™ Advance. Flash Advance Linker can copy any GBA game (ROM) onto your PC hard drive.
If you don’t have Flash Advance linker, you can download GBA ROMs off the net. It’s illegal to download and by law you have to delete the ROMs in 24hrs if you don’t own the GBA games. Similarly, if you do not own the game, download the ROMs at your own risk.
Downloading your GBA ROMs online
www.coolrom.com and www.romulation.net provides great GBA ROMs list. Remember, download at your own risk.
Now you’ve got ROMs, you need an emulator to play Gameboy Advance ROMs on your Computer. For this i will be using VisualBoy Advance. One of the most widely used Gameboy Advance emulators.

Download VisualBoy Advance
Features
- save game state at any point
- graphic filters to enhance display: 2xSaI, Super 2xSaI, Super Eagle, Pixelate and Motion Blur
- full screen support
- screen capture (through menu or configured key)
- joystick support
- speed up button
- Gameboy Printer emulation
- Gameboy GB, SGB, GBC and GBC on GBA emulation types
- SGB border support
- auto-fire support
- translation enabled (for emulator only)
- hacking capabilities, including search engine, Gameboy Gameshark and GameGenie support and GamesharkAdvance and CodeBreakerAdvance support
- GBA debugger in the SDL version Linux, Windows and BeOS (SDL version)
- import Gameshark Game Saves, codes, etc…
- import battery files from other emulators
- export battery files to other emulators
- sound recording
After you’ve download Visualboy Advance, Unzip and run the program VisualBoyAdvance.exe.
Setting up your Visualboy Advance
Setting your Visualboy Advance sound (see image below)
Mute – No sound
Off – No sound and computer runs faster
On – On sound

Setting your Visualboy Advance Joypad (see image below)
The default controls are:
(GameBoy Advance Control = Keyboard Key)
Up = Up Arrow
Down = Down Arrow
Left = Left Arrow
Right = Right Arrow
Select = Backspace
Start = Enter
Button A = Z
Button B = X
Button L = A
Button R = S
Go to “Options” -> “Joypad” -> “Configure” -> “1″ to change the controls.

Setting your Visualboy Advance Video Size for better Graphic (see image below)
Go to “Options” -> “Video” and select either x2, x3, x4 or full screen if you want to fill the screen with the game. Next go to “Options” -> “Filter” and select either 2xSaI, hq2x or lq2x.

Loading a game
Go the “File” menu and select “Open”, search for your GBA ROMs. Some games (especially homebrew ones) come with the .BIN extension but most use the standard .GBA extension.
Now you can play GBA ROMs on your computer. You can even use cheats like Gameshark code in your Visualboy Advance.
Cheats in Visualboy Advance
Go to www.gameshark.com to search for your cheat codes.
To put in Gameshark codes, go to Cheats -> Cheat list. Click on the Gameshark button, fill in the “Description” and “Code” boxes, click “Ok”. Restart the game so the cheats can take effect.
Playing Multiplayer with Visualboy Advance
See now you love playing your GBA ROMs on you computer, tell your friends and ask them to play multiplayer with you.
To play multiplayer, you need to download Visualboy Advance Link.
Go to Visualboy Advance Link multiplayer instructions to setup your Visualboy Advance Link.
Go to Visualboy Advance Link multiplayer LAN setup to setup your Visualboy Advance Link for LAN.

Hi Mark,
First try to play on GBA and save the game, try locating the save file folder in your GBA.
After you have located the save file on your GBA original cartridge.
Try opening your VBA and locate the VBA save files and transfer the VBA save files to GBA save files folder you located earlier.
I didn’t try this before but you can give it a shot.
Hey after reading your post about how to play GBA games on PC I was wondering if it was possible to transfer the save fives back to the original cartridge after playing.
