It’s been a long time since I posted something on my blog. I’ve been very busy with my projects and other jobs at home. Since this is my first post of 2010, I wish my loyal readers a Happy Year New Year!. Well enough said, let’s get started.

How To Run And Play Classic DOS Games On Your Computer

DOS games were originally designed for 16-bit systems like Atari Jaguar, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Neo Geo, TurboGrafx-16/PC-Engine, Super Nintendo Entertainment System/Super Famicom known as SNES and many more.

Here some 16-bit systems images.

Getting started

Before we get started, we need some games to download off the net and an emulator to get the games running on your computer. Here are some list of sites to download your games.

1. Dosgames.com
2. Dosgamesdownload.com
3. Download-Full-Games.com
4. Abandonwaredos.com
5. Classic-Pc-Games.com

There are tons of DOS games online available for you, you can search it online. Now you’ve download your games, lets learn how to get your emulator. An emulator is a free program that allows a computer or modern console to emulate a different video game console’s.

To run DOS games, you will need DOSBox. DOSBox is an emulator that recreates a MS-DOS compatible enough to run many classic MS-DOS games and is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

You can install DOSBox here, with a little commands and codes to do the job. The hardest part, getting games to run and execute some commands. If you’re having trouble with that, there some frontends for DOSBox.

A frontend pulls together the many functions of the program that will let you run DOS programs for you. If you are a newbie or you don’t like editing command lines by hand then a frontend is the solution for you. The good part about this frontend is that, you can install this program like other normal Windows software and can be use after you install it. You don’t need to bother about those troublesome commands.

The best DosBox Frontend so far I’ve tested is D-Fend-Reloaded, it emulates a complete computer including the DOS commandline and allows to run nearly all old DOS based games on modern hardware with any of the newer Windows versions. It’s free and you can download it here.

After you’ve downloaded the D-Fend-Reloaded, install it and proceed to the next step below.

Go to FileImportImport archive file… and locate your DOS games you’ve downloaded earlier.

Once done, you game will appear in D-Fend-Reloaded, all you need to do is double click it and run it.

Make Your DOS Games Portable

Go to http://portableapps.com/apps/games/dosbox_portable to download dosbox portable apps for your thumbdrive. If you don’t know what is, let me explain. Portable application is a portable and lightweight piece of software that can be stored in a USB Flash Drive. You can carry around with you anywhere you go and use it on any other computer. It’s like carrying your whole computer around and use them at your work place, office or school.

Visit http://portableapps.com/support/portable_app#installing for General Support Guidelines for Most Portable Apps from Downloading a Portable App to Installing a Portable App.

This can be useful in some other ways to you if you love Classic DOS Games so much like I do. I hope you’ll learn something useful today and I guess this is goodbye then. And one more thing, if you love this post so much, don’t forget to subscribe. You won’t miss any important update. See Ya!
