Preventing your web browser from being hijack is possible when you take enough precautions. Users do not realize when their browser has been hijacked. Mistype a URL and will get redirected to some search web site you never heard of or you’ve been downloading some freeware such as KaZaA. Many computer users don’t even realize that these freeware are secretly installing malicious code to your browser.

What you need to look out for:

Avoid POP-UPs. Check your URL before you surf, and chances that you get redirected to some search web site you never heard of. Get out. Avoid porn sites too, they secretly install malicious code and without users realizing, they already taking over your browser.

Symptoms:

  • The homepage of your browser is changed suddenly
  • You suddenly notice an extra toolbar on your browser
  • Firewall alerts you to an unknown program trying to access the Internet
  • Computer slows down
  • Search engine or other settings changed
  • Massive popup windows, unable to stop or close
  • New programs in the Add/Remove Programs section

What to do:

Go to www.bcheck.scanit.be to scan for vulnerabilities found on your browser. If you,ve found no vulnerabilities, remember the symptoms so you know that your Browser has been Hijacked

If you fail the scan, proceed to next step.

Cleaning up:

Restore your browser settings:

  • Close all browser windows and leave one open
  • Restore your settings to default settings
  • Close your browser and open it again, it should have the default settings

Note: if the site that changed your browser settings is visited again, it is likely there’s spyware installed, go here to download HijackThis by Merijn. This will remove known spyware in your computer

System Restore:

Try to restore your system to earlier date.

For XP – Go to start button – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools – System Restore.

For Vista – Go to start button, type rstrui into the search box and hit enter.

If the problem continues, try updating to the latest Service Pack.

Last move:

If you’re using IE, remove it and install Firefox. Go here to read how.

This guide does not 100% clean your browser, just remember preventing is better than curing. If you like this post, please subscribe to RSS to receive more updates!

  1. This is an interesting topic what to do when our browser has been hijacked. The same thing happen to me before like when I miss type the URL it get redirected to other pages installing malicious code to your browser. What I did was I just formatted the system and reinstalled all the software again. Whenever I use Internet I always allow POP-Ups but now I always check the URL before surfing. Thanks for the useful blog and I am looking forward to your new blog.
